History of the Musical
Through Emma's Eyes was written and composed by Jenny McKinney. Before Jenny felt the spirit guide her into this project, she had quite a dislike for Emma Smith. She had heard all of the horrible rumors that have floated around since Emma didn't come west with the rest of the saints. As the hard teacher, Life, came upon Jenny, she began feeling more like a kindred spirit to Emma. She felt led by the spirit to learn more. As she did, she found that Emma was very misunderstood. She believes that, given the correct information and the opportunity to learn, most people will come to love and revere Emma Smith as the "Elect Lady" that she truly was. She was human. She made mistakes and had many, many trials, but 'Only the Lord can judge what's in our hearts.' It took Jenny nearly three years to bring this musical to fruition. She wrote all of the music, 32 songs, and the script. She worked with Kyle Woodruff, a music arranger, to give the music more interest and depth. She edited, changed, and edited some more. Her every breath was this musical. With a small, but wonderful cast, the full-length production, Through Emma's Eyes, had it's World Premier in Salt Lake City on April 1st, 2008. Three nights were performed in a Stake Center on the south end of the valley. The fourth night was performed in a Stake Center in Bountiful. There were many obstacles to overcome, but the spirit was strong. Many lives have been changed as a result of this amazing woman!
